Connected packaging · Direct sales

Your label is
the shop.

It's the one piece of marketing still in the customer's hands after the sale, and very often it's nearly empty. Most brands send its QR code to a home page. Here's how to turn it into a reorder button, a price that never needs reprinting, and a map of where your products end up.

01 · Why now

People already scan. Most codes waste it.

Connected packaging is any pack a phone can read: a QR code, sometimes an NFC chip you tap. It's no longer a novelty. What's missing is the step that pays.

0%

of shoppers say they at least sometimes scan the codes on food and drink packs (Innova Market Insights, as reported by Packaging Insights).

0%

of 712 companies surveyed in 2026 already use connected packaging, up from 73% a year earlier.

0%

of those companies are interested in serialised codes: a different code on every item.

Most of those codes open a story, a recipe or a manual. Useful, but it leaves the most valuable moment on the table. The customer is holding your product, they like it, and it's nearly empty. That's the moment to sell, and the code is already in their hand.

A label that sells is called shoppable packaging, or a direct commerce label: the code opens that product's page, and the page takes the payment.

02 · Three problems

One small code. Three big leaks.

Tap each one to see what the scan shows.

The empty pack is the reminder. The code is the button.
03 · One code per product, or per item

Every item, its own signal.

The industry is moving from one code on every box to a unique code on every item. Switch the view to see the difference on the network.

One code per product: every pack of a product reports to the same dot.

One per productOne artwork, simple to print. Scans counted per product. Good for reorders, updates and recalls.
One per itemA different code on each label, printed from a spreadsheet. Tells packs apart: one pack scanned in many towns, repeat customers.

An estimate from your inputs. The QR page figure is DeStore's pay-as-you-go price: 35c to publish and 99c to host each product's page for 10 years. Mandatory label information still has to be printed on the pack, so not every change can move to the page.

06 · The rules that still apply

The code adds. It doesn't replace.

Mandatory label information stays on the pack +

In Australia the Food Standards Code decides what a food label must show. A QR code can add detail, never replace what must be printed.

Selling direct makes you the seller +

The Australian Consumer Law's guarantees apply online as they do in a shop, and if you're registered for GST, your price includes it.

Privacy is part of the product +

If you collect personal information through a scan, say so plainly. The simplest path is not to collect it at all: count scans by town and phone type.

General information, not legal advice.

07 · What's coming

The label is about to do a lot more.

AI assistants that buy

Checkout is moving into AI chats. OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol already lets some merchants sell inside ChatGPT. A clear product page with names, prices and stock is what those assistants read.

Tills that read QR codes

GS1's Sunrise 2027 aims for retail checkouts to read 2D codes such as QR codes. One code on the pack could then ring up at the till and open your page. GS1 suggests printing it beside the existing barcode for now.

Digital product passports

The EU is bringing in product passports group by group. If you export to Europe, the code on your pack is where that information will live. What Australian brands need to know

Tap or scan

QR codes and NFC chips are increasingly used together. The chip can hold the same address as the code, so one page serves both.

08 · Where labels are going

Less on the label. More behind it.

Our view: labels will carry less print and more code. Every scan becomes a data point, and AI turns the page behind it into the product experience itself. Before AI, a product page was a flat, two-dimensional screen. With more compute, it can be a film.

01

Less ink. One code.

Ingredients, stories and offers move off the pack and behind the code. What must be printed stays printed; everything else can change any day.

02

More scans. More signal.

Give people a reason to scan and every scan tells you where, when and on what phone, with nothing personal kept.

03

AI makes the experience.

AI writes and designs the page in your brand's look, so a small brand gets the craft that used to need a studio.

04

From page to film.
